Meet the Artist - Luis Meza

From my beginnings in Venezuela to my current studio in Oxford, UK, my life has been involved with art and a deep love for animals. Explore my story and artistic approach here.

Originally from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, and now based in Oxford, UK, Luis Meza is an artist specialising in detailed and expressive wildlife art and pet portraits.

Working primarily with coloured pencils, Luis captures the beauty of animals, from beloved pets to majestic wildlife, with a focus on realism and conveying their unique soul.

Art has been a lifelong passion, nurtured within a family of artists, and his aim is to share his vision of the animal world through his art, transforming fleeting moments into lasting works of beauty.

Tools & techniques

I specialise in creating detailed and realistic artwork using colored pencils.

My primary tools are Polychromos Faber-Castell and Caran d'Ache Luminance pencils, prized for their vibrant colours and blendability.

I layer these pencils on Fabriano Extra White Hot Pressed watercolour paper, employing techniques like layering, burnishing, and blending to build depth, texture, and a sense of realism.

While my primary focus is colored pencils, I also occasionally use graphite pencils, typically on Bristol board paper.

This meticulous process allows me to capture the intricate details and subtle nuances of my subjects.
